this is maybe not the scene you’d expect on a Sunday morning in forye County Georgia 40 miles north of Atlanta the song taped by Indian musician a rman in support of kamla Harris is part of a strategy some Democrats say could be key to their election hopes this November there’s enough folks now that our district is 30% aapi about 15% South Asian so these folks are no longer marginalized groups now they’re the margin of Victory Ashman ramaswami the son of Indian immigrants is just 25 years old he’s now in one of the most competitive State Senate races in Georgia running on issues like gun safety and reproductive Health he’s among the youngest of a growing number of indian-americans in politics Nikki Haley Rana and of course Harris even though indian-americans make up less than 2% of the electorate they tend to lean Democratic and some think they could be key in helping the party win in places like Troy Michigan or in the Philadelphia suburbs 43,000 South Asians indian-americans have become citizens between 2021 and 2024 we’re reaching every one of them and saying have you registered now that you’re a citizen are you voting why would you vote for the other side when we have somebody who is one of us who represents our values a Bloomberg analysis shows indian-americans give less than other groups and they vote at about the same rate as white people but Republicans and Democrats say it’s a demographic with plenty plenty of room to run Republican party leadership has to understand the value of their percentage in the voter voters and also look at the personalities and their education levels their Ambitions and make more inroads into the communities
