🆚 Bing vs. Google – is Bing really better & should you switch now?

video
play-rounded-fill

hi everyone kevin here today we are going to compare bing and google to see who truly is the champion of search chances are you likely use google as your main search engine how do i know that well google has 92 percent worldwide market share so you probably use google unless of course you live in russia or china in which case you’ve probably never heard of google before and bing is the number two search engine and when i say number two it’s not like you’re running a race and the number two competitor is a second or two behind you it’s more like being as maybe a lap or two behind you they have pretty small market share but they have been investing heavily on improving their search results and do they deserve another look and how do they compare to google we’re going to run through a whole bunch of criteria to see who truly is the best search engine all right let’s jump in this brings us to criteria number one and that’s market share once again google is dominant with over 92 percent of worldwide search engine share being together with yahoo which bing powers has only under four percent basically bing would have to grow over 24 x just to get to google’s point today so why does this matter and why is this important well the more search volume that you get the more data that you have about what people are searching for this allows you to optimize your results better and google has a massive edge here not a microsoft edge but an edge this brings us to criteria number two and that’s name recognition google’s been around since 1998 and they haven’t changed their name since then google is pretty much synonymous with searching when people search they don’t say i’m going to search they say i’m going to google it as an aside google’s legal team hates this because if people start using it as a generic verb they have the potential to lose their trademark status with bing on the other hand they would die to have people refer to being it or using bing as a verb the best they usually get is when people say bang because it’s not google bing has had a more troubled gaming history they started as msn search at the beginning and when that didn’t go anywhere they rebranded to windows live search that was a mouthful so they changed the name again to bing in 2008 and eventually microsoft being in 2018. let’s just say that there’s probably another name change due in probably the next year or two this brings us to criteria number three and that’s the quality of the page now everyone’s familiar with the google home page it’s simple it’s efficient you could even describe it as a little bit bland it’s definitely not flashy and they’re just focused on getting you the results and right here you have the search box and just for the fun of it i’m going to type in my name here and for whatever reason a lot of people are interested in my wife i don’t know if i should be concerned but i’m definitely going out tonight and i’ll buy my wife some flowers and also cook her dinner and down here a lot of people on google also seem to be interested in my net worth now remember i used to have a high paying job at microsoft and i left that job to go work on my small youtube channel so what do you think happened the bing homepage on the other hand is a lot more flashy here i have this picture of the day and every day i’ll see a new image down below i also have some let’s just say some trashy news that’ll probably distract me from my search but luckily i can minimize this and i could customize what the home page looks like now let’s try that same search as what i typed in in google here i see the auto suggestions and for whatever reason people seem more interested in microsoft sway than my wife if i had to choose a winner i would probably go with bing i kind of enjoy seeing a new image every day so i’ll give the point to bing this brings us to criteria number four and that’s how bing and google handle some of the most popular queries now it turns out that a lot of people who use search engines use it for branded or navigational queries so that’s people looking up youtube or facebook or amazon as a funny story on bing it actually turns out that the very top query is google so what that means is people open up the bing search engine and then they search for google go to google and then they conduct their search i don’t know about you but that’s gotta hurt this brings us to criteria number five and that’s how these search engines handle tail queries a tail query is something that not many people search for and this is an area where google excels for example if i search for i don’t know the kevin cookie company chocolate chip cookie recipe here i see the result in the first position on google but it doesn’t show up at all on bing and that is completely unacceptable being we need to make sure people find our recipe once again google has higher market share and it knows what people are searching for and so as a result it can handle the tail better and unfortunately for bing it’s a classic chicken and egg problem to get better results you need more traffic but to get more traffic you need better results this brings us to criteria number six and that’s video search with google the video results look like standard search results it’s really not that visual also when you play a video it sends you off to another website with bing on the other hand the previews are more visual it’s easier to find the video content that you’re looking for when you hover over a video it plays a preview and the video also plays directly in bing so it’s very easy to jump from video to video now you would think google would do a better job here since it owns youtube but i have to say that bing is the clear winner here this brings us to criteria number seven and that’s image search for image search both show pretty rich images and they both offer additional tools or filters that allow you to filter down the size the color and even whether the image is copyrighted when you click on an image preview google shows the preview in the top corner for some reason and instead they continue to prioritize just the results view bing on the other hand when you click on an image you get this very nice large preview here again i have to say i prefer bing for the large image preview this brings us to criteria number eight and this is something called search answers so let’s say you’re looking for movie show times the weather maybe you’re looking for a specific address both google and bing handle these pretty well here for instance when i search for the latest movies i see all the movies that are currently playing i could see show times for theaters near me and they both do a fairly good job so i’m gonna have to say they tie for this one four criteria number nine how do these search engines handle shopping queries so i don’t know let’s say i want to get a video doorbell i’ll search for the wise doorbell both google and bing provide shopping results here i could see different retailers i could see the pricing and i could click into the product so here again both bing and google i would say are tied this brings us to criteria number 10 and this is which search engine likes to have more fun and google here is a clear winner here i could search for what did google look like in 1998 and here i see google in 1998 i could search for a dvd screen saver and here i see the google logo moving across my screen just like a screensaver i could ask google to do a barrel roll i could ask what it looks like when it’s askew i could even ask the answer to life in the universe and everything and google will tell me the answer to that bing on the other hand is maybe a little bit more corporate or enterprise and it doesn’t have any easter eggs integrated in the experience and this brings us to the very last criteria you can earn money searching with a search engine and this is something that bing is trying and maybe it’s a move of desperation since their market share is so low but they have something called microsoft rewards and it’s kind of like a frequent flyer program the more you search on bing and the more you use the edge browser microsoft will pay you money you can make up to ten dollars per month and hey you have to use a search engine anyway whenever you have questions so why not make some money when you answer those questions hopefully as we’ve been walking through this you’ve noticed that both of these search engines have been investing heavily and i think what that goes to show is that competition is a very good and also healthy thing without being well google undoubtedly wouldn’t be nearly as good as they are today and without google well let’s just say that we would all still be familiar with altavista so which search engine is better and who wins well at least for me personally i have bing set as my default search engine but you could also make the argument that i might be a little bit biased i used to work at microsoft and for some time i worked on bing and also my wife continues to work at microsoft so actually you might be a better judge of who’s better let me know down below in the comments who do you think we should crown as the new search engine champion to see more videos like this please consider subscribing and i’ll see you next time [Music] you
