Germany Moves to Protect Top Court Against Far-Right Interference
In a move aimed at safeguarding its democratic institutions and upholding the principles of judicial independence, Germany’s ruling coalition has passed a law designed to prevent potential interference by far-right extremists within the country’s highest court, the Constitutional Court (Bundesverfassungsgericht or BVerfG).
The measure, known as the "Secrecy of the Constitutional Court’s Deliberations" or "Vorab-Furteregesetz", prohibits individuals suspected of extremism from attending top-secret sessions or discussions involving the court’s judges or magistrates. This includes the potential removal of judges from sensitive caseloads or high-security matters involving national security and immigration policy.
According to officials, the legislation aims to address growing concerns over the spread of far-right ideology in the judiciary and government institutions, which were amplified following the 2021 presidential election.
