if you’re watching the US Open this year you probably noticed there’s no line judges gone are the days where tennis players would have heated arguments over a call today most line judges have been replaced by electronic line call a technology that tracks the trajectory of the ball using cameras computers and microphones it’s been used in some Grand Slams including the Australian Open and US Open and Wimbledon combines line judging with ELC from an official’s point of view you always uh you know we we want to get the call right and you know having the technology that we can to make sure that the calls um are are made right and it’s Affairs for all of the players is is something that that we all like Jake Garner started as a line umpire almost two decades ago and has seen the evolution from an official’s point of he believes in the technology and ensures there’s always some human backup just in case the system we’re very confident in its accuracy it’s always tracking um sometimes there’s a situation where the system doesn’t speak to the court to say make this audible call or send the signal to the chair ire when that happens we have a review official that’s monitoring it they communicate with the chair ire and they ensure that again ultimately we’re getting the call right on on court US Open was the first Grand Slam to use electronic line calling in 2006 and since 2022 has had no line judges and while the association of tenant professionals has operated with a combination of ELC and onc Court line judges they announced that starting next year ELC will be used in all matches
