on the 13th of April 1963 that was the day before his 22nd birthday a young man born and raised in Cincinnati walked to the plate at Crosley field as a member of the hometown Reds and recorded the first hit of his major league career which showed the home crowd which they could expect and then naturally the second baseman hustled his way to a Triple Pete Rose ended his career with 4,256 hit more than any other player in the 150-year history of Major League Baseball but when his greatness on the field faded controversy off the field emerged allegations of gambling on baseball while he was the manager of the Reds led to investigations and ultimately a lifetime banishment his post playing ears became defined by his absence from the game which had defined him Pete Rose died on Monday at the age of 83 and while he was never inducted into Cooperstown which I believe ultimately he should be you cannot tell the history of this game without including the story of Charlie hust
