Australia, Canada and NZ call for an immediate ceasefire to end catastrophic human suffering in Gaza

"United in Condemning Indiscriminate Violence, Three Nations Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza"

Canberra, Ottawa, and Wellington – The Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand governments, typically known for their close bilateral relations and shared values, have now come together to condemn the latest outburst of violence in Gaza. Despite their geographical distance from the crisis, these three nations have used their collective voice to call for an immediate ceasefire, citing the unbearable and catastrophic human suffering inflicted on the besieged Palestinian population.

The unanimous statement, released on Thursday, emphasized the urgent need to stop the unnecessary bloodshed and bring a negotiated solution to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict. "The Governments of Australia, Canada, and New Zealand join the international community in strongly condemning the outbreak of violence in Gaza," said a joint statement. "The scenes of injury, death, and destruction are disturbing and unacceptable. It is time for all parties to come together to create a more peaceful and secure future for Palestinians and Israelis alike."

In light of the devastating consequences of repeated conflicts, the three governments demanded an immediate and unconditional ceasefire by all parties involved. "The status quo is unsustainable, and it is in the best interest of all to avoid further escalation," they added.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia highlighted the Australian government’s long-standing commitment to supporting an independent and sovereign Palestine alongside a secure and democratic Israel. "We recognize the aspirations of both parties and urge all relevant parties to work towards a peaceful, fair, and lasting resolution."

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern noted that her country has always held a strong and consistent position in condemning violence and promoting dialogue, emphasizing the need for international collective action to address the crisis. "In this moment of crisis, it’s vital that we work together to restore the foundations of peace and stability in the region," Ardern said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau echoed the sentiments, saying that "ending the violence and achieving a negotiated settlement is the only path to real peace and security." The Canadian government has been vocal about its support for a two-state solution and has called on Israeli authorities to exercise restraint in responding to Palestinian protests.

The joint statement issued by the three governments concluded, "Now is the time for leaders and peoples everywhere to come together and support efforts that promote peace, justice, and human dignity."

As the international community grapples with the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the call to action by Australia, Canada, and New Zealand stands as a powerful reminder of the devastating toll of violence and the urgent need to recommit to peaceful solutions.

"In the face of such unimaginable hardship, we must not lose sight of the possibility of a better future," emphasized New Zealand’s Foreign Minister, Winston Peters. The three governments will continue to cooperate and work with international partners to reinforce the imperative for a peaceful, inclusive, and sustainable resolution to the conflict.

With compassion and resolve, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand have spoken out as one, demanding an end to the senseless violence in Gaza and a new path towards durable peace and reconciliation for the suffering people of the region.
