Title: Hamas and Fatah Sign Declaration in Beijing to End Yearslong Rift
After years of rivalry and conflict, two of Palestine’s main political groups, Hamas and Fatah, have signed a historic declaration in Beijing to put an end to their feud and reunite their differences. This breakthrough marks a significant step forward for Palestinian reconciliation, sparking hope among supporters for a united front in their ongoing struggle against Israel.
According to reports by the China Daily and other state media outlets, Hamas’s top diplomat, Ismail Haniyeh, and Fatah’s negotiator, Nabil Shaath, were in Beijing this week where they officially signed the joint declaration. Chinese foreign minister, Wang Yi, along with officials from both delegations, were in attendance as witness to this important moment.
After the signing, a statement by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed their government’s ongoing support for a unified and self-determined Palestinian state, advocating for peaceful resolutions through dialogue rather than force.
Fatah and Hamas, who respectively control the Western-backed Palestinian Authority and the Islamic movement that dominates the Gaza Strip, have been embroiled in bitter fighting since a violent crisis broke out in the West Bank city of Nablus in 2006.
Since the Hamas takeover in 2007, Israel has enforced an economic blockade against the territory, with various international embassies moving out and isolating Gaza diplomatically and militarily.
Many experts hailed this recent move, stressing that the announcement opens a pathway towards rebuilding international consensus, alleviating pressures and creating chances for improved Israeli-Palestinian diplomatic ties in an ever-critical geostrategic location.
“This historical signing could eventually pave the path toward peaceful relations in this long-devided area of Jerusalem, not simply reining in local instability. Thereby, Israel too has become more concerned that Palestine regains influence after recent worldwide recognition at their government’s declaration of Jerusalem.”
