Catskill, New York, is a beautiful town nestled in the Catskill Mountains, eastern part of the country. From its natural attractions to its artistic vibe, Catskill has it all. In this impromptu expedition, I relied on a few techniques to produce the desired landscape shots:
- Shooting in RAW: Before beginning, I set my camera to capture RAW files, ensuring maximum flexibility with each exposure. Post-processing would become crucial, allowing me to fine-tune shadows, highlights, and color grading.
- Light management: Since I had only one prime lens, I depended on available light – largely the soft, diffused light pouring in from the sky. This natural light worked wonders for my overall exposure, with nary an overexposure in sight.
- Panning Techniques: Carefully assessing each position, I employed a slow, deliberate panning action, using the camera’s metering process to compensate for depth. Moving the camera as if drawn by a fine line of smoke (not to overdo it), I adjusted each frame in-camera for additional stabilization, seeing as how no tripod was within reach.
- Bringing Cues from Film: ‘The decisive moment,’ Henri Cartier-Bresson’s theory on capturing exactly the right instant, became my mantra.
