in the final weeks of his administration President Biden has achieved if not Middle East peace and at least the calming of the most volatile front in Israel’s more than year old war against Iranian proxies and against Iran itself the Israeli security cabinet under prime minister Benjamin nany approving a 60-day suspension of hostilities with the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon that would go into force on Wednesday morning it would also see Israel says a removal of Hezbollah from Southern Lebanon north of lebanon’s Lani River a gradual takeover of those territories by the Western Back le Lebanese military and Israel says should Lebanese authorities manage to execute their side of the deal this 60-day truce could prove more protracted however the Israelis have also said that they intend to strike at any attempt by Hezbollah to violate the truce to regroup to rearm to smuggle in Arms from nearby Syria so this truce like many will be tentative it will be on tenter hook some of the time but if it proves successful it may actually contribute to calming other fronts namely the Gaza Strip where this War Began Israel says that by delinking Hezbollah and Hamas it may make the Palestinian militant group in the South feel more isolated and more open to some sort of deal under which at least some of those hostages would be returned
