As I step out of the pre-dawn darkness and onto the rocky peaks of Tom, Dick, and Harry, a symphony of colors erupts above me. From my vantage point at 7,000 feet atop Tom, Dick, and Harry – three peaks that make up a minor range within the larger framework of the Cascades – Mount Hood appears as a gentle behemoth, its slopes gently glissading into the wilderness.
As the sun climbs higher in the sky, the light begins to caress the surrounding landscape, casting intricate patterns of shadow and light upon the rock faces and snow-covered ledges. The air is crisp and still, filled with the sweet scent of juniper and the distant promise of ice-glazed peaks.
Tom, Dick, and Harry, named after legendary Old West outlaws, lie along the crest of the range like three sentinels guarding secrets of the wilderness. The trio – collectively known as the Three Apostles – offers hikers, climbers, and nature enthusiasts breathtaking vistas of Mount Hood, the Pacific Northwest’s highest peak after Rainier.
In the mornings like this, when the world still hangs heavy with mist and anticipation, few trails are more enchanting than those leading to the top of Tom, Dick, and Harry. The ascent, while sometimes demanding, is rewarded with unparalleled 360-degree views of the region.
For those willing to rise to the challenge, the journey begins where many of the region’s most prominent hikes originate: the Mount Hood Meadows area. From here, trails – both marked and unmarked – begin to wind their way upward toward the higher peaks, where hikers and climbers can find solace in solitude and the raw beauty of the region.
For those who’ve weathered the ascent, the panorama awaits: a kaleidoscope of blues, greens, and grays stretching as far as the eye can see, with Mount Hood remaining center stage. It is no small wonder that this range continues to captivate the hearts and imaginations of adventure-seekers, photographers, and naturalists alike.
