The Resilient Beauty of Red Rock’s Oldest Secret: The Natural Rock Arches of Sedona, Arizona

Tucked away in the winding canyons of Sedona’s Redrock-Secret Mountain Wilderness Area lies a geological miracle that has stood the tests of time. The natural rock arch at Redrock-Secret Mountain Wilderness Area, nestled within these ancient red rock formations, is a tranquil oasis that embodies the rugged spirituality of Arizona’s Red Rock Landscapes.

Perches, as these rock formations were locally known, is an engineering marvel that defies gravity at an astonishing 45 feet tall x 60 feet wide, an astonishing measure of the region’s enduring geoidal forces. The area, as its name suggests, holds onto a deep and intricate secret of which few are privy– a testament to its mysterious formation. The arch stands at high noon, a time of utmost day, in the heart of Arizona’s hot and arid landscape (see image [1_1]).

Red sedimentary rock, over a geological span of 330 million years spanning from the Triassic to the Neogene, had weatherd under the relentless hammering in the course of time and finally culmened in the natural arch on this site, leaving us breathtaking views of the Colorado Plate (see image [2_]), and the surrounding hills (photographed in Fig [1_c]). The rocky surface features numerous layers, ranging in material composition from dolomite on the uppermost, down to shale that’s been partially cement into a limestone that can not be seen from below, leaving an unexplored part of this rock formation below. Furthermore, a layer of silt also has been laid out throughout this rock formation’s life since it was laid in millions of years ago.

Here are, then, the basic points at a glance:

  • Dimensions | Its shape, at 45 feet in either height and 60 feet in width are, in an area whose weathered stones show indications of being 10 to around 15 million years older, is really impressive.
