Rainy and Windblown Milford Sound, South Island, New Zealand [OC][3445 x 4211]

Rainy and Windblown Milford Sound: A Breathtakingly Unpredictable Experience

Milford Sound, a majestic fjord located on the southwestern coast of New Zealand’s South Island, is known for its breathtaking natural beauty and unpredictable weather conditions. As the largest sound in Fiordland National Park, it stretches 15 kilometers inland, surrounded by towering cliffs, waterfalls, and lush rainforests. And on this particular day, I had the privilege of experiencing the sound at its most dramatic – during a torrential downpour and howling winds.

The Arrival

As our boat, the Milford Sound Discovery, chugged through the calm waters of the sound, the first drops of rain began to fall. It was as if Mother Nature was setting the stage for an unforgettable performance. The sky grew darker, and the winds picked up, rustling the leaves of the rainforest canopy above. We were about to embark on an adventure that would test our resolve and showcase the true majesty of this region.

The Storm Unleashes

Within minutes, the rain turned into a full-blown tempest. Water cascaded off the boat’s canopy, creating miniature waterfalls and soaking the decks. The wind howled through the sound, causing the water to churn and froth in a frenzy. Our captain, a seasoned veteran of the sound’s unpredictable weather, expertly maneuvered the boat through the turbulent waters.

Despite the chaos, the rainforest-clad mountains remained eerily serene, their ancient trunks towering above the storm-tossed sea. The waterfalls, already spectacular under normal conditions, were transformed into magnificent displays of power and beauty, with massive plumes of water shooting straight up into the air.

A Window into the Past

As we rounded a bend in the sound, we stumbled upon a tranquil oasis – a secluded waterfall, tucked away from the fury of the storm. The rainwater created a mesmerizing mist, shrouding the area in a mystical aura. It was as if we had been transported back in time, to an era when the sound was formed, millions of years ago, by the relentless erosion of the Fiordland Mountains.

A Rare Treat

The storm’s ferocity brought out a host of wildlife, normally hidden from view. We spotted seals and penguins, braving the rain and wind to hunt for food or socialize with their kind. The cacophony of birdsong, normally muffled by the sound’s natural tranquility, was now amplified, providing a symphony of sounds to accompany our boat ride.

A Sense of Accomplishment

As we steered the boat back towards Milford Sound’s exit, the storm slowly began to dissipate, leaving behind a sense of accomplishment and awe. We had witnessed the raw power of nature, and it was humbling. The memories of this rainy and windblown day in Milford Sound would stay with us forever, a reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of this breathtaking region.

Tips for Visiting Milford Sound

  • Always check the weather forecast before visiting, but be prepared for changes.
  • Bring a waterproof jacket and pants, and consider bringing a change of clothes.
