if you’re a fan of cherry trees you’ve probably heard of Stumpy people have made t-shirts and calendars inspired by it and the tree also has a dedicated fan base it was no surprise that when it was cut down last year many were disappointed one Reddit user even threatened to chain themselves to the trunk to save it Stumpy and more than 100 other trees were cut down to make way for a massive repair project of the crumbling seaw wall protecting the Title Basin in Washington DC a sea level rise of more than a foot means that the Title Basin SE wall today provides 6 ft less protection than originally designed but not All Is Lost thanks to the efforts of the National Arbor R little stumpings actually clones of the tree have taken root what’s beautiful about what’s happening to Stumpy is that it’s being rejuvenated it’s being turned into mulch and seedlings for future trees and that’s the purpose it’s this ongoing cycle of tree life while Stumpy 2.0 might not be ready for a planting soon its clones will surely attract huge crowds once they’ve grown into healthy trees
